- What are the criteria for becoming
an Intern with Career Edge?
Career Edge internships are open to graduates of university,
college or high school wishing to spend six, nine or
twelve months gaining career experience with an established
Canadian organization. A typical Career Edge Intern
is a graduate with strong academic credentials but lacking
the relevant work experience to get a start in his or
her chosen career. The Intern must be eligible to work
in Canada, have no previous career-related work experience,
and must not have previously accepted a Career Edge
internship.
- I have not yet graduated, can I still
apply?
If you are currently in school, but would still like
to register in order to view the internship postings,
you may indicate your previous graduation on the on-line
registration form (e.g., if you are presently attending
a post-secondary institution, you may enter your high
school graduation information). Registration simply
allows you access to the internship postings and this
information is not passed on to anyone. Keep in mind,
however, that you are not eligible to take on an internship
until you have graduated from your current program.
- I have work experience from abroad
but I recently moved to Canada, am I eligible for this
program?
If you are legally able to work in Canada and have
no previous Canadian work experience then you also face
barriers to employment and are eligible for the Career
Edge program.
- Can I apply for any position listed
on your Web site?
You can apply to as many positions as you like if you
meet the qualifications and have the level of education
requested by the Host Organization. For example, a college
grad should not apply for a high school grad position.
- Do I get paid to do an internship?
As an Intern you will receive a monthly stipend of
$1,500 per month, less required deductions. Twice each
month, Interns receive payment of the stipend from Career
Edge. All Interns are covered by Workers' Compensation
(CSST in Quebec), and all provincial medicare taxes
or premiums for the intern participant will be paid
for by Career Edge.
- How do I register with Career Edge?
From our home page, read About
Career Edge. Return to the home page, click on Candidates
and then on Join Now.
You will be linked to the Intern Registration page.
Fill out the form and click on the "Register"
button. You will be asked to chose your own unique Password
(please write it down once you have chosen it, and remember
it is case sensitive). The computer will confirm your
registration by assigning you a User Name (please write
it down). If you do not receive registration confirmation,
go back to the registration form, ensure that the form
is complete and resubmit the form.
- How can I view the Internship opportunities?
To view the internship opportunities you must be electronically
registered with Career Edge. If you are a graduate of
university, college or high school, all you have to
do is answer a few questions and choose a Password.
You will then be given your own User Name. Once you
have registered, go to the page titled already
registered and enter your User Name and Password.
Once this is done, click on positions available to search
for opportunities. It is not necessary to fill out all
sections of the form. You may simply want to search
in your province for your educational discipline or,
if you want to see all the opportunities, leave the
form blank, scroll down to the bottom and click on Search.
- Can I search for a particular position?
Yes. Enter keywords, like the position name or field
(e.g., Human Resources, Accounting, and Business) in
the keyword section of the search form and click on
Search. If you get the message "This search returned
no records, please go back and try again," enter
a new keyword or simplify your search by choosing for
example, only your city or province and educational
discipline and then click on Search.
- Can I apply for more than 1 internship?
Yes, you can apply to as many internship positions
as you want. Just make sure you meet the qualifications
requested by the Host Organization.
- Can I complete more than 1 internship?
Graduates are entitled to only one internship through
Career Edge, regardless of outcome, so be sure when
choosing your internship that it is truly something
you think will help you gain the skills you need to
find the career you want at the end of your internship.
- Are internships full-time or part-time?
All internships are full-time (35-40 hours a week),
for a duration of either 6, 9, or 12 months.
- Does Career Edge offer summer internships?
No. Career Edge internships are 6, 9, or 12 months
in duration. The purpose of the program is to help graduates
make the transition from full-time school to full-time
work. It is anticipated that Interns will begin their
careers from their internships.
- Can internships replace co-op?
No. Career Edge does not replace co-op. Co-op is a
requirement of a university or college program that
a student needs to graduate and Career Edge internships
are only available once the individual has graduated.
- Can I send or drop-off my résumé
to the Career Edge office?
Unfortunately, we do not accept résumés
at the Career Edge office. Résumés are
sent directly to the Host Organization offering the
internship as they complete their own recruiting and
selection. To find out where to send your résumé,
read through internship postings that are of interest
to you and each one will inform you where to send your
résumé.
- Where can I view the participating
Host Organizations?
From the home page, click on About
Career Edge. Read through the text until you get
to Host Organizations. Click on Host
Organizations to see the current list.
- I want to complete an internship
at one of your participating Host Organizations, but
they do not have any positions currently on your site.
Not all of our Hosts have internships available at
all times. Anyone who is on our list has hired an Intern,
although some of our Hosts may hire only one Intern
a year, while others may hire more than 50. You can
monitor the site for an internship at the Host Organization
of interest, or you could send your résumé
to that organization’s Human Resources Department. Mention
in your cover letter that you are aware that they are
participating in the Career Edge program and would like
to complete an internship with them. The company may
then keep your résumé on file for when
they develop their next internship.
- What if I want to work in a company
that is not on your list of Host Organizations?
Please contact our office (888-507-3343) and we will
send you information on recruiting your own Host Organization.
The onus would be on you to sell both the Career Edge
program and yourself to the organization. Host Organizations
are required to pay for their Interns through the program;
Career Edge is not a government funded organization.
