- What is Career Edge?
Career Edge is a national, not-for-profit corporation
that has been established to execute the mission of
bringing Interns and Host Organizations together and
ensuring the quality standards of these experiences
are maintained.
Career Edge internships are open to graduates of university,
college or high school wishing to spend six, nine or
twelve months gaining career experience with a Canadian
company. A stipend of $1,500 per month, less required
deductions, is paid to Interns during their experience.
All Career Edge internships have four common elements
-- employment experience, learning, coaching and networking.
Combined, these elements bring the concept of Career
Edge to life and serve to foster a mutually rewarding
relationship between Interns and Host Organizations.
Organizations interested in providing internships apply
to become "Host Organizations" by registering with Career
Edge and signing the Application and Agreement to Become
a Host Organization -- Code of Conduct and Workplace
Practices document. Once approved, Host Organizations
are invited to post their internships on the Career
Edge Web site.
- How does the program work?
Youth can browse the Career Edge Web site and apply
to internships of interest to them. Host Organizations
receive the applications and are responsible for screening
the résumés and selecting their Interns.
After a verbal offer has been made by the Host Organization,
Career Edge enters into an employment agreement with
the Intern. Host Organizations pay Career Edge a fee,
which includes the internship stipend, normal payroll
taxes and a small administrative fee. Interns are paid
semi-monthly by Career Edge.
Graduates are entitled to only one internship through
Career Edge, regardless of outcome.
- How do I apply to participate in the program?
You can apply directly on the Career Edge Web site.
From our Home page, click on Host
Organizations, then click on register
now!.
Complete the on-line Application and Agreement to become
a Host Organization and electronically submit the application;
printout the Application and Agreement to Become a Host
Organization with the attached Code of Conduct and Workplace
Practices and sign them; fax or mail both signed forms
to us with your most recent annual report and your deposit.
- What is an Executive Sponsor?
The Executive Sponsor is usually a senior person within
your organization who undertakes your organization's
involvement with Career Edge, endorses the program --
acts as its champion and maintains final accountability
for the success of the program.
- What is a Co-ordinator?
The Co-ordinator is the person within your organization
who works with managers to define internships and write
postings, co-ordinates recruitment and selection of
Interns, and ensures the selection and training of Coaches.
The Co-ordinator also acts as day-to-day contact for
Career Edge, ensures compliance of the Code of Conduct
and Workplace Practices, monitors and ensures the quality
of the internships and processes payment of Career Edge
invoices.
- What is a Coach?
The Coach is the person or persons within your organization
who works one-on-one with the Intern, preparing the
Intern for work, ensuring the Intern is gaining the
employability skills he or she needs to gain permanent
employment, such as responsibility, teamwork, flexibility,
critical thinking, and communication and networking
skills. The Coach will also provide formal and informal
feedback to the Intern.
- How can I view the other organizations that are participating
in Career Edge?
From the home page, click organizations, register now,
then our
members.
- Can I pay the Intern over and above the stipend amount?
The stipend is a fixed nominal remuneration to cover
basic living costs during a learning experience. It
is not a salary or an hourly wage. It is a fixed amount
paid to all Interns in the program regardless of which
organization they are working for, which province, and
their education level.
You can also choose to reward your Interns with a new
Bonus plan. This new option lets you acknowledge your
Interns with a maximum bonus of $4,000. Host Organizations
can either pay a one-time bonus or reward Interns with
several smaller bonuses throughout the course of the
internship. Please complete and submit the Bonus
Selection Form to the Career Edge office to process
your request.
- How do I post an opportunity on your Web site?
In the registered Host Organization section, click
on the Add New option. Fill out all sections of the
form and submit.
- I am receiving an error message when I try to submit
my posting
Most likely you have left a section of the form blank.

The User Name the computer assigned to you when you
registered is case sensitive and was assigned to you
in lower case. Please ensure that you are typing your

site by other Host Organizations?

- How do I edit the information I submitted when my
organization registered online?
In the registered Host Organization section, click

- Does Career Edge pre-screen the résumés
before they are submitted to me?
Career Edge offers two different options for you to
choose from. The first option is to have interested
applicants submit their résumés directly to the organization
offering the opportunity on the Web site. It is then
up to each Host Organization to review the résumés and
interview only those who are eligible for the program.
The second option is to use the Career Edge Selection
Services. Career Edge can review the résumés and
take care of telephone interviews for the Host Organization.
We will then present your organization with a short
list of candidates for you to interview directly.
- What happens if I cannot find anyone to fill the position
that was posted on the Career Edge Web site?
Interns do not necessarily have to be recruited through
our Web site, you can also post the opportunity at your
local college or university or go through the general
résumés received in your office. The advantage
of potential Interns viewing the position on the Web
site is they understand the concept of the internship
and the stipend paid to the Interns.
- How do I register my selected Intern with Career Edge?
To get information on registering your new Intern,
select Intern Registration & Forms from the registered
Host Organization Services section of the Web site.
Here you will get the step by step Intern registration
procedure and the Intern registration form that you
will have to fill out.
