Career Edge internships are open to graduates of university,
college or high school wishing to spend six, nine or twelve
months gaining career experience with an established company
in Canada.
A typical Career Edge Intern is a graduate with strong academic
credentials but lacking the relevant work experience to get
a start in his or her chosen career. In some cases, Host Organizations
are using Career Edge as an opportunity to host Interns from
disciplines such as liberal or fine arts who might not have
been considered in their regular recruitment process.
Organizations interested in providing internships apply to become
Host Organizations by registering with Career Edge and signing
the Application and Agreement to become a Host Organization
-- Code of Conduct and Workplace Practices. Once approved
as a Host Organization, internship opportunities are posted
by the Host Organization on the Career Edge Web site.
Prospective Interns browse the Web site for opportunities that
are of interest to them and submit their résumés as directed
in the posting. Host Organizations can choose either to have
résumés submitted directly to them for review, sorting and interviewing
or to use the Career Edge Selection Services. With the second
option, Career Edge will review and sort résumés, as well as
conduct telephone interviews with applicants. The Host Organization
is then presented with a short list of candidates to interview
directly. Either way, the Host Organization selects the Intern
they would like to host.
The cost of hosting an Intern for one year is $20,650 ($21,250
in BC, MB, QC), plus applicable taxes. This is paid directly
to Career Edge, and covers all costs, including the $18,000
annual stipend paid to the Intern, $1,900 payroll taxes ($2,500
in BC, MB, QC) plus a $750 administrative fee. All Interns are
covered by WCB (CSST in Québec) and all provincial medicare
taxes for the Intern are paid for by Career Edge. Host Organizations
can also choose to reward their Interns with a bonus option
of up to $4,000. This bonus can be awarded for a variety of
reasons and can be paid at any point during the internship.
Host Organizations are also welcome to place Interns outside
of their organization. Several Host Organizations have placed
Career Edge Interns in organizations unable to sponsor an Intern,
such as their customers and suppliers, or not-for-profit organizations.
